In order for a sport body to be defined as “amateur” and, accordingly, be eligible for financial support from the CASBF, it must:

  • Be governed by an enfranchised national and/or international federation, association and/or multi-sport organization;
  • Be recognized by Sport Canada;
  • Adhere to and/or apply established nationally and internationally recognized standards and rules of competition;
  • In the case of federations and/or associations, have a clearly defined sanctioning process for classification of competing athletes at multiple skill levels ranging from recreational to high performance/elite tiers; and in the case of multi-sport organizations, have membership that meets this standard;
  • In the case of federations and/or associations, have sanctioned athletes that are potentially eligible to compete at national and/or international competitions/events; and in the case of multi-sport organizations, have membership that meets this standard; and
  • In the case of federations and/or associations, be the governing and/or sanctioning body for competitive events and/or other competitive activities that are staged annually in three or more Canadian provinces and/or territories; specifically, stage frequent, recurring competitive events leading to national championship(s) on an annual basis; and in the case of multi-sport organizations, have membership that meets this standard.
